College and Career Lab
Worried about paying for college? Confused about which career path to take? If so, join us at the Central Library on Monday, April 21, at 6:00 PM or Monday, April 28, at 6:00 PM for our College and Career Lab.

Find Fun at Franklin Avenue Library for Teens
Teens, the Franklin Avenue Library is offering several fun and free
events just for you this spring!
Want to improve your neighborhood? Teens CAN make a difference in their community, and the library wants to give you a chance to do just that. Come to the next Teens Making a Difference (T*MAD) advisory board and take part in an hour-long volunteer opportunity.
T*MAD will meet at the Franklin Avenue Library on
Wednesday, April 23, from 4:00 - 5:00 PM.
If you prefer something quieter, try the Teen and Tween Knitting Club.
Bring a knitting project and some sunny conversation on Friday, April 25, at 4:00 PM.

One More Adventure
The Central Library will offer its last Adventure Series author of the year on Tuesday, April 29, at 7:00 PM. Stephen Kuusisto, an accomplished graduate of the University of Iowa's famed Writer's Workshop and New York Times notable author, uses musically laced poetry and prose to open readers' ears into the world of the blind.
He will be discussing his most recent book, Eavesdropping: A Memoir of Blindness and Listening, as well as excerpts from previous works. After the event, there will be a brief question and answer session, followed by a book signing. Books will be available for sale before and after the event.
AViD Author Visit
Join us at the Hoyt Sherman Place Theater at 1501 Woodland Ave. as bestselling author Alexander McCall Smith will stop in Des Moines to discuss his life and literature.
Well-known for both his The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency and The Sunday Philosophy Club series, McCall Smith has authored more than sixty books, ranging from the academic to short story collections and popular children's books. Greatly influenced by his birth and childhood in Zimbabwe, as well as his professorship in Botswana, his literature captures the life and culture found within the two African nations. His bestselling No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series has garnered international acclaim, having been translated into thirty-nine languages and selling more than seven million copies nationwide.
In addition to being an internationally known author, he has been a professor of law and medical law at the University of Botswana and the University of Edinburgh, respectively, as well as having been a visiting professor at various universities within Italy and the United States. Currently, he resides in Edinburgh, Scotland, with his wife Elizabeth and their two daughters, Lucy and Emily.

Bridge in Your Neighborhood
The Greater Des Moines Bridge Center is offering a Saturday morning workshop and an exhibition game of duplicate bridge. This workshop is for bridge players interested in learning about duplicate bridge and updating their skills. Experienced bridge players will be available to answer technical and procedural questions concerning the game and explain the mechanics of play.
If you are a social bridge player and are interested in learning how to play duplicate bridge, please join us for a fun morning of bridge at the Central Library on April 26, 2008. Call Nancy Wilson (285-9916) for more information. This program will be located in the Grand Meeting Room Wing.
Baby Sign Class
The Central Library will host two more baby sign classes throughout April.
These classes are designed for hearing-abled parents and babies. Come and learn different vocabulary and techniques from American Sign Language to begin communicating with your baby. You may be surprised at what your baby can “say.”

Speakers on George Washington Carver Visit the Library
As part of the African American Museum of Iowa's year-long project, "Iowa Roots, Global Impact: The Life and Legacy of George Washington Carver," two prominent area speakers will present programs on the Iowa legend at the Des Moines Public Library. Deb Lewis, curator of the Ada Hayden Herbarium at Iowa State University, provides a fascinating look at Carver’s work while he was at Iowa State and recounts his friendship with Louis H. Pammel on Monday, April 14, at 6:30 PM in the Forest Avenue Library’s community room.
In conjunction with the Wallace House Foundation, Thomas Phillips, retired Director of Community Investment with Pioneer Hi-Bred, will discuss Carver’s impact as a mentor to Henry Wallace on Thursday, April 17, at 6:30 PM in the Grand Meeting Room of the Central Library.
The “Iowa Roots, Global Impact” project includes a major exhibition at the African American Museum of Iowa, traveling exhibits, programs, and more. Sponsors include the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust, State Historical Society, Inc., Humanities Iowa and the National Endowment for the Humanities, General Mills, Silos and Smokestacks National Heritage Area, Pioneer Hi-Bred, and many more.

AViD Author Series Also Features Popular Book Reader
With a voice that has narrated everything from Don Quixote to Snow Falling on Cedars, George Guidall has an audiography that features close to a thousand unabridged books. He is part of this year’s AViD Author Series lineup and will give a reading on Thursday, April 10, at 7:00 PM in the Central Library.
A man who has performed more books than most people read in a lifetime, Guidall also has had a forty-year career in the theater that includes leading roles on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and in theatres across the country. He has appeared on major soap operas as well as in shows such as Law and Order, The Equalizer, and Spenser for Hire. Guidall can perform numerous dialects including Australian, Canadian, French, German, Irish, Russian, Scandinavian, Yiddish, and even Midwestern.
One of the audiobook industry’s most acclaimed readers, Guidall is the recipient of an Obie Award as well as Audie Awards for his performances of A Widow for One Year and I Know This Much Is True.
Simpson Student and Australian Professor To Discuss Book
Hear the story of how a young Simpson College student’s semester abroad at Curtin University in Australia turned into a yearlong project capturing the stories of prisoners at the Boronia Pre-Release Centre for Women. Professor Ian Fairnie, Director of Community Relations, will join native Iowan Danny Heggen, for a program detailing their work to produce a collection of stories called Voices on the Inside: The Women of Boronia.
The Boronia Pre-Release Centre is a leader in the field of justice and an innovative project in which the Department of Corrective Services adopted a forward-looking model of imprisonment that recognizes the diverse needs of women. Its program structure and daily activities mirror the responsibilities faced by women in everyday life, supporting a strong family and community focus. Books will be available for sale and signing.
